Features and Affordability Highlight R-Volution's New PlayerOne 8K and PlayerMini Universal Media Players

full?d=1719063046.png

(June 21, 2024) Founded in 2023, R-volution is a young buck in the home theater segment. Young, hungry, and ready to play the role of disruptor.

This coming weekend, the company will arrive at the Midwest AV Experience Show (MWAVE) armed with two new multimedia players outfitted with broad compatibility and price tags that definitely warrant your attention. The flagship-worthy PlayerOne 8K and the smaller PlayerMini, are designed to intelligently retrieve, consolidate, process, and deliver content of various file formats from a wide range of physical, mobile, and digital devices, including computer hard drives, Blu-ray disc players, online streaming services, and more.

Of course, the devil is in the details, and a closer look shows rich versatility across the board, with HDMI 2.1 compatibility and HDR, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision video processing. Additionally, they offer 4K and 8K upscaling with AV1 native 8K file playback, and DTS:X, Dolby Atmos, and – yes – even Aura3D surround-sound processing.

R-volution says the players are designed and engineered to function as a primary source component in a home theater system. The PlayerOne 8K media player has 32 TB of onboard storage. Additional external storage is available in the form of the R-volution NAS, which stores and distributes content to media players located throughout a residence.

The PlayerOne 8K and PlayerMini are said to deliver user-friendly operation enabled by a revolutionary automatic identification process. All movies and TV shows are accessible via the players and are categorized into specific genres and searchable alphabetically, by release date, duration, and other parameters. The players also automatically tag each movie and TV show in the menu with a marque poster, film synopsis, technical references, and other useful information. On-screen navigation is smooth and intuitive and allows easy access to various settings and content on other devices.

“Today’s savvy home theater owners have an endless array of content available to them from a wide variety of AV components, computer hard drives, mobile devices, and streaming services—so much so that selecting and retrieving a movie, program, or video can be a difficult and tedious process. R-volution’s PlayerOne 8K and PlayerMini have been purposely engineered and designed to streamline this exercise dramatically,” says Raphael Tabutin, CEO of Let’s Get Physical, R-volution’s exclusive U.S. distributor of the new multimedia players. “From a single AV component users can easily browse and quickly access all their physical and digital content on a customized user interface that automatically organizes and categorizes their choices. The PlayerOne 8K and PlayerMini function seamlessly as the heart of a home theater, changing and evolving organically as new media, technologies, and user preferences are introduced.”

And now, for the part that will really grab your attention – the pricing. The PlayerOne 8K and PlayerMini retail for just $899 and $399, respectively. That’s right, serious bang-for-the-buck affordability. If you’re interested in learning more or would like to make a purchase, visit R-volution’s distribution partner, Let’s Get Physical Distribution, at www.letsget-physical.com.

This is very intriguing to me. I was about to hop on the Zappiti bandwagon just before the defecation hit the rotary oscillator. Considering it’s basically the same thing I’m very interested.

If it can do all that it claims it can do in a good way... they probably won't be able to make enough of them.

I noticed they are also distributors for Reavon and Magnetar, which I thought were dwindling in production.

Trying to see if we can get them on a live stream… super interesting tho. I’d love to move my physical collection completely to K-scape or something like this

Def considerably cheaper than a K scape... Did you watch Matthew Poes youtube on streaming services vs movie theaters? Very jnteresting.

I would like to see someone who has a K-scape player compare the K-scape version versus the actual disc and see if they are the same MBPS rate, and if they are the same size. Matthew said that K-Scape gets a different version supposedly, and did not know if K-Scape was as good as the disc or not.

It would certainly make it a lot easier to find a movie and not have to look thru all your collection, especially if it's a large one. Mine it not crazy big, but it can take a few minutes to find a movie all along. The only sorting I've done is music/concerts in one section... everything else is scattered.

It also appears you can load SACDs for multichannel playback. It would be pretty neat to have all your movies and music in one machine, although I am spoiled already with Roon, yet it does not play SACD.

Luckily I do not have a large SACD collection, so I play those on a Pioneer Elite bdp-80fd...which I also use to rip SACDs to the hard drive. The Pioneer was only a few hundred dollars when I bought it and it works fine for playing my SACDs. If you do a search for ripping SACDs, you will find it is pretty easy. Now there are SPECIFIC chips required which my Pioneer as well as Oppo (not sure if it is all or only specific players) can do. You download the software and put it on a bootable USB stick and then you can rip...when you are done, you remove the USB stick and when you reboot it..it is back to normal. Whenever you want to rip, you just insert the USB stick and turn on the player.

This was at MWAVE last weekend. It looks great. I didn't play with it much, but it worked for me the in the time that I did play with it. I can't say that about K-scape. Every room that had K-scape was having technical difficulties. MWAVE was a great show by the way.

Technical difficulties from Kscape? This is the first I’ve heard of that. I thought one of the selling points on how expensive they are is that they are rock solid and don’t have problems like that.

All I can say is that every room that I was in the K-scape had some issue that required a restart. This venue was full of people using mobile devices constantly. This may have had something to do with it. Not enough bandwidth in the area possibly.

You would think that all the KScape rooms would have their demos downloaded ahead of time, no bandwidth needed. Interesting for sure.

For someone just starting with ripping media, I would need more than just the R_volition player to get started (4K drive to rip from, a hard drive to rip to, etc). The upfront cost is a bit of a hurdle for me.

I've certainly never had any issues with K-scape, but it still needs to be demonstrated with no issues. That's a shame they were not prepared for it.

Yeah... their NAS, which includes a ripper, is not exactly cheap. However, they do have a standalone ripper for about $250... assuming it can be used without the NAS.

Taking time to load all the movies would be my issue. 45 minutes for each 4K UHD is a bit long.

I noticed it is not compatible with Netflix or Disney streaming and is limited to 1080p with Amazon Prime Video.

Hi @gatestick. It was good to meet you and your family at MWave.

I had my Kaleidescape at MWave and had no problems. I had it playing almost constantly from Friday to Sunday afternoon. Some rooms that had a Kaleidescape were also using an HTPC and switching back and forth depending on the demo session. Nobody should have needed any bandwidth for the Kaleidescape. I only had my Apple TV connected to my hotspot and the Kaleidescape was offline the entire time.

I've always used my own gear except speakers/subs at shows like RMAF (Rocky Mountain Audio Fest), AXPONA, and MWave. Most rooms have products from various vendors and someone is unfamiliar is trying to get it all to work. The JTR Speakers room was using Chris Seymour's (Seymour Screen Excellence) Kaleidescape which is about 8 years old. Nobody helping with that room had used a Kaleidescape before, I don't think. Add in madVR Envy Extreme and StormAudio ISP processor and it is easy to get a setting wrong that creates an HDMI issue requiring something to be reset. Usually they start with the source device.

For example, if you have navigation clicks turned on in an Apple TV 4K it can cause the StormAudio ISP with the HDMI 2.1 card to not lock onto the audio track because of the constant audio stream changes. Rebooting one device fixes the issue until the next time it happens. You have to turn off navigation clicks on the Apple TV to actually solve the issue.

Wow... navigation clicks? That is odd. I don't use the clicks at home, as they are annoying anyway.

Sorry I missed you guys at MWAVE... really wanted to be there and had full intentions of going, but I got jammed up here at home, on top of having feet issues. It takes me a few hours to get to where I can walk without it hurting. Wrong shoes, I guess. Sitting on my rear end for too many years, now outside every day working around the house, has taken a toll on my old feet. Gotta get it figured out so that I'm not so limited.
When I checked before...the standalone ripper software (included when you buy the NAS) for ripping was only good with their ripper.
Thanks for clarifying. :T

Yes it was great to meet you as well. I'm glad to find someone in the Omaha, Nebraska area who is an enthusiast and not just a business.

I wasn't trying to say anything bad about K-scape, only that this environment would provide every technical difficulty imaginable. I really like K-scape. It's just in the dream part of my budget. Like winning the lottery.

On that note, I'm glad I took my wife and kid to the show. I think they had as much fun as me. She convinced me that it would be ok to take home 2 Stereo Integrity 24's. Changing my room around now. I went to MWAVE with the hope of getting an Anthem AVM90 three days used at a discount. I'm happy and still looking for the great deal.

I was hoping to meet you in person @Sonnie. I have followed you since finding this forum. I hope things get better soon for you.
