(December 5, 2024) McIntosh has unveiled the MSA5500 Streaming Integrated Amplifier, a thoughtfully designed unit that combines McIntosh’s renowned amplification with a range of modern streaming capabilities. Its compact size makes it a practical choice for audiophiles working with smaller spaces or seeking a simplified setup without sacrificing quality or performance.
The MSA5500 can handle various streaming platforms and technologies, including Apple AirPlay 2, Chromecast, Spotify Connect, and TIDAL Connect. It also supports Bluetooth 5.0, which offers compatibility with Advanced Audio Coding (AAC), aptX HD, and aptX Adaptive for high-resolution wireless playback. For those using networked audio systems, the amplifier is Roon Ready, ensuring seamless integration and consistent performance.
In addition to its streaming capabilities, the MSA5500 offers considerable power, delivering 100 watts per channel into 8-ohm speakers or 160 watts into 4-ohm speakers. This output provides enough flexibility to accommodate a range of setups, whether in smaller rooms or more demanding environments. It also features seven digital and five analog inputs, including a Moving Magnet phono input for turntables, making it a versatile choice for connecting a host components. HDMI ARC functionality allows users to connect compatible TVs, enhancing audio playback far beyond the capabilities of standard TV speakers or soundbars, though it is important to note that the HDMI ARC input is audio-only and does not pass video signals.
Sound quality is crafted by a Quad Balanced 8-channel, 32-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC). McIntosh says this DAC enables precise audio reproduction with low distortion and a wide dynamic range, promising clarity and musicality across digital sources.
McIntosh has designed the MSA5500 with adaptability in mind. As users’ systems grow, the amplifier’s internal amplification can be bypassed, allowing it to function as a preamp and streamer. This ensures it remains relevant and valuable even as system configurations evolve. Its inclusion of proprietary technologies such as Power Guard, which prevents distortion, and Sentry Monitor, which protects circuits, adds to its longevity and reliability. The unit also incorporates Monogrammed Heatsinks for efficient thermal management and gold-plated Solid Cinch binding posts for secure, corrosion-resistant speaker connections.
True to McIntosh’s heritage, the MSA5500 features a clean and timeless design, complete with the brand's iconic blue meters and green badge glow. You can also expect robust build qualities that allow it to fit seamlessly into various setups while maintaining McIntosh’s signature aesthetic.
Available this month through authorized McIntosh dealers, the MSA5500 is priced at $8,000 USD.
