Our Theater

Description

Spent the past few months to update the theater and not it is finally ready. Changes I made include:
  • Updated the pre-processor to AVM 70
  • Re-did all the wiring
  • Added bass traps
  • Added acoustic cloud absorber on channels so that they can be moved easily if I move the speakers
  • Made speaker stands for the front speakers
  • Relocated the surround and back speakers to meet ATMOS guidelines
  • Replaced the string lights with LED lights
  • Tightened everything that rattled
  • Repainted all walls, ceiling and trims

The room:
  • The theater is 33.86' Long, 13.86' wide and 8.83' high
  • All the walls have an inch of acoustic insulation behind GOM Fabric, covering the bottom half.
  • The platform for the second row is 8" high
Speakers:
  • M7K S-150 THX for the fronts
  • M&K SS-250 THX for the surrounds
  • M&K SS-150 THX for the back
  • M&K MX-5000 MK-II Subwoofers. On in the front and one in the back.

Pre-processor: Anthem AVM70
Amps: Anthem MCA 20 and MCA 50
Projector: JVC RS40
Power: APC UPS powering the projector, Monster power conditioners for everything else.
Sources: Roku Ultra 2, Xfinity and a linux server running Plex for music and home video

Very nice setup. I bet that was a lot of work to cover all those panels with the GOM.
Thanks! I built this almost 20 years ago. I was a lot younger then :)

BTW: In the pictures, the walls look a nasty red. They are actually covered with GOM FR701 Claret Accent. The picture with the step shows the right color.

I don't know... looks like that might be Crimson there... :heehee:

What's behind the black curtain?
There is a window behind the curtain. I have an acoustic panel covering the entire area. It can be easily pulled out if needed.

Nicely done! Looks like a fun project with a great equipment list  ! What kind of screen (and how big) are you using with the JVC?

Do you intend to add WIDE and ATMOS speakers (and amplification) to match the AVM70’s capabilities?

Thanks Tom! I am using a 120" Stewart Firehawk for the screen.
I do plan on adding Wide and ATMOS speakers later in the year. Right now researching speakers and amplification that will go with what I have right now. Not sure if I should stay with M&K speakers or get something else. I love the speakers I have right now but M&KSound has gone thru a couple of bankruptcies and their support isn't what it used to be. Investigating if timber matching the ATMOS speakers to the others is critical or not. Wide, sure, I think they should be the same but not sure about the height speakers. Ideally, yes, they should but ...

Fantastic screen coupled with a great projector!

In my own set up I used very different speakers for the ATMOS and am very happy with the results. I agree that timber/timbre matching is important across the front channels most especially. The other channels maybe less so . With the ATMOS speakers, perhaps dispersion and sensitivity are the more important considerations(?).

Keep us updated as you add the new speakers and amplification!

Thanks for sharing your room and continued enjoyment!

Looks great! Nice job!

What processor did you pull out when you upgraded to the AVM70?

What was the reasoning behind re-wiring the room?

I replaced an older Anthem processor AVM20.
I had to do some rewiring because I moved the surround speakers to meet the ATMOS guidelines and moved one of the subs from the front to the back.
The other thing I did was to cleanup the wires going into the rack. It was a mess before.

Awesome. I currently have the AVM60 in my rack and I love it. My room is a mess, however, as I’m hoping to be moving cross-country soon, and have been testing a bunch of different gear in this room since I know what the room sounds like. Stupid pandemic has really been a wet blanket on the job search tho.
