Medi0gre's Grindhouse

Description

My room became a concept in 2012 after i googled home theater looking for ideas on how to tweak my 5.1 setup... Should i buy a Klipsh sub or maybe a Velodyne sub? etc, etc.
Then i ran into you guys and I ate the red pill.

Room Dimensions 20' x 10' 9" x 7' 6"

Sound proofing design goals were to keep outside noise out of theater, Single layer 5/8x walls and ceiling. The ceiling did get whisper clips and channel.
Hvac was isolated with mufflers and hush box.
20 amp breaker for racked gear and 2 -15 amp breakers for lighting and non a/v plugs.

7.4.4 Atmos setup
Denon x4300
Sony str de597 - My first 5.1 reciever, now is being employed to run top rears
Behringer Inukes 6000 non dsp and 3000 non dsp for sub dutys
2 Dayton 18" 460HO-4 and 2 Dayton 18" Ultimax Subs all in DIY 4 cubic' boxes
Behringer FBQ 2496 for dsp
LCR Polk audio RTi A9
Surrounds and height are Volt 6s from DIY sound group - Erich is great, highly recommend!
Panasonic ae8000
Falcon AT Screen Scope 110"
Insteon switches controlling 7 zones
Logitech Harmony Elite remote

And my door... I love my door. 2 ply 3/4" Mdf with 3/4" Mdf trim and rivets with automatic door sweep and 5" wide throw hinges.

There are a few items left on the ole punchlist like grills for my riser, filling and painting a schwack of bullet holes and staining my stage and riser hardwood, but once you put that projector up things get hard.
Thanks for looking, Cheers.

Very nice!

Gotta love that red pill.

I have some questions if you don't mind...

What are the small gizmos (look almost like mics) in front of each of your three front speakers?

The DIY subs... you put two different subs in each enclosure... can you elaborate on that a bit more? Are these in four different enclosures? I asked because I have been considering buying a Dayton kit from a fellow.

The gizmos are just small pot lights I use for up lighting, all just for effect with the AT screen.
The subs are in 4 separate 4 cubic ft sealed enclosures wholly based on other builds and recommendations. Diysoundgroup.com actually sells a very similar design which i based my boxes off of. I would have bought his flat packs for convenience sake but as i live in Canada shipping would have been ridiculous.
Plus I'm a supposed to be a carpenter by day so i gave it a whirl.
The different subs were actually a accident, the HOs are the ones with dust caps and were supposed to be sold, i ended up hanging on to them, here's to hoping the integrate fine.

Ahh... okay... makes sense on the lights.

I was looking at using the Parts Express boxes with a couple of SI HT 18's... mainly because they cost less than the UM18-22 and PE is out of stock on the drivers right now. Looks like DIYsoundgroup has boxes specifically for the SI subs... and for less money. Thanks for the link. :T

"Then I ran into you guys and I ate the red pill." No kidding! You blew right past the point of no return.

Beautiful theater! Construction and decor is top notch. Thanks for sharing the photos.

What a beautiful home theater space! :T:T:T:T:T Fantastic. Great colors, great execution!!!

Curious: Have you tried A/B comparisons of your frontend speakers (with and without the AT screen)? Curious if you can hear a significant difference?

I have not tried, to be honest or never even gave it any thought till now. Audyssey should compensate for any attenuation i would think or hope.

Meant to ask... is there a story behind the large hole in the floor? (2nd to last photo) Thankfully it looks like it was addressed before the build. Looks like a sink hole waiting to happen!

Well, no reason to dismantle to experiment. Just curious.

Your door, btw.... KILLER!

Nice, impressive room. I know what you mean about once you put up the projector all progress slows. I wonder if the forum gets kick backs for all the money they incite us to spend, I mean Todd has some nice gadgets....wonder how he acquired them :whistling:

Original contractor that poured the floor used some lousy job practices. Left a cluster of boulders under my slab, I think seven. I guess they didn't feel like carrying them out of the basement before pouring concrete.
The slab ended up being extremely weak and thin in that area and ended up heaving and cracking.
Slow motion War of the Worlds pod scene.

Hey now! :-)

Full disclosure: There are some things I own that have been purchased on what's called "Industry Accommodation" after the fact, which is some percentage off retail (and that widely varies from manufacturer to manufacturer... as little as 5% and as much as 30%)... and a lot that I've paid full price for. No funny business, though... no manufacturers broker deals in exchange for reviews. That needs to be stated up front. No kick back or offers to influence promotion of a product.

It's always frustrating to find surprises like that... back when we bought our first house I was shocked by discoveries like that. Now, I'm a jaded veteran homeowner that just shakes his head.
