(June 5, 2018) Apple’s recent Worldwide Developers Conference held in San Jose, CA was loaded with exciting announcements, including news that Dolby Atmos is coming to its Apple TV 4K device. According to the company, Atmos sound will begin appearing on iTunes titles this fall when tvOS 12 is released.

Apple TV 4K is now the only streaming device on the market that’s both “Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos Certified,” a formidable pairing designed to deliver customers the ultimate 4K video and immersive audio experience. And keeping in line with Apple’s generous film upgrade policy that gives HD title owners automatic access to 4K versions when they’re released, Atmos will automatically be added to previous purchases.

Apple currently lists titles like The Lego Batman Movie, Blade Runner 2049, Mudbound, Ready Player One, and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle as being offered in 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos, all of which give fans of the platform an early glimpse of what will become available. And while Apple’s recent announcement didn’t indicate if the supported Netflix App would also carry Atmos functionality, the company’s website list’s Netflix’s Lost in Space and Altered Carbon as Atmos available titles. So, the possibility of Netflix Atmos encoded titles is very real.

In other Apple TV news, Apple announced a new cable-box killing partnership with Charter Communication’s Spectrum cable service. Apple TV equipped Spectrum subscribers will soon have access to live channels and Video OnDemand media directly through their Apple device. In addition, Apple TV will offer customers “zero sign-on,” for anyone connected to a cable provider’s broadband service. Zero sign-on eliminates the need for passwords, automatically logging customers on to any connected apps.

This is exciting news. It looks like Apple TV is separating from the pack with Dolby Vision and Atmos.

I’m certainly intrigued... but I need to hear it vs a disc based experience first.
