Are there Bass Traps for specific Hz ranges?

Hello,

I have used REW to take measurements of my room. From what I am seeing in the spectrograph it appears the there are (at least) two problem Hz areas 52 and 85Hz. Based on watching REW Videos part 1 and 2, Bass traps would be required. For reference I have a room that is 2.6m wide 2.4m high and 5.9m long.

I am based in Europe and from looking at thomman.de there are a number of options Triangular Prism, Recangular and cylindrical.

I know all rooms are different and the treatment required is different for each one. But I am wondering if folks have some recommendations for remediating these troublesome low frequencies.

All réponses are much appreciated.

Thanks
Jonathan

You need to check tuned resonators. Most common is Helmholtz resonator. They are bulky, but you can tune them to perfection, as long as you have the proper measurement tools.

Check the products from gikacoustics.
I don't see any tunable bass traps there...
Check https://www.acoustique-studio.com/ulysses-tuneable-bass-trap-noir-c2x21455692 or https://www.artnovion.com/product-categories/3-bass-trap/products/908-bass-trap-corner-slotted or
They are not cheap. You can make them at moderate cost, though.

They are tuned, not tunable.

This is a good place to do some research about bass traps and placement... http://arqen.com/bass-traps-101/placement-guide

Maybe you could tell us a little more about your use case... Music room, Home Theatre or Tracking Mixing Mastering Studio... Tube traps and/or Soffit traps can be a good place to start... Room treatment first then EQ...

Sure, I have a home studio, for recording, mixing and mastering. I am looking to tame some of the low end peaks I have some existing panelling that's appears to flatten frequencies above 220 Hz. However I have measured two peak frequencies at 52 and 85Hz. I see similar results with sonor works measurements.

I should add, from plugging into room measurements into the Amroc room calculator, the tool suggested I place some bass traps along my back and wall (which is where my speakers are position).

Attached is the screenshot from the Amroc tool, showing where the frequencies are loudest for the 50-60Hz range.

Cheers
Jonathan

What is the size of your room. Just to check it coincides with fundamental room modes.
52 and 85 Hz suggest 22' x 13' (6.50m x 4m)

I may be interpolating the frequencies as the problem Hz appear to differ slightly (+/- 5Hz) between REW and Soundworks room measurements

You can also use Room Sim in REW... It will allow you to place speakers and listening position, etc... Post a .mdat of your rooms response...

Here are the three .mdat files readings I took.

Any pointers are much appreciated.

Those tuned Membrane traps are very fickle for location. They might be most effective a few feet off the wall. They require a lot of experimentation and may end up somewhere not expected.

Everything is location dependent in small room acoustics... Speakers, Listening Position, Absorbers, Traps, Diffusors, other hard and/or soft surfaces... Place bass absorbers where 3 surfaces come together and 2 surfaces next... Range limited soffit traps work well... Your trying to tame below the Schroeder frequency where is room is in control... Your .mdats show that the transition zone and above are pretty good...

Grab yourself a copy of Master Handbook of Acoustics by F. Alton Everest and Ken C. Pohlmann... You may be able to find a previous version .pdf on the web... Not only is there a lot of good information about acoustics, there is also discussion on various style of traps and absorbers with diagrams and calculations on how to build them...

The room is in control everywhere. I think the purpose of passive treatments are to attempt to help realistically everything above 100Hz unless you have massive absorbers. Below the Schroeder frequency we have the ability to do more EQ'ing whereas above about 300 to 500Hz or so, EQ'ing should be done sparingly, if at all.

You may wish to review the following literature regarding small room acoustics and the Schroeder frequency...
