(July 2, 2020). Denon is following up its impressive X-Series lineup reveal with a modestly priced stunner: the all-new AVR-S960H. Designed to attract forward-thinking budget-oriented enthusiasts, the S960H is loaded to the brim with HDMI 2.1 tech, including true 8K compatibility.
The S960H is Denon’s first S-Series AVR with 8K compatibility, introducing tempting HDMI 2.1 technology at a very attractive price point. In addition to a dedicated 8K input for 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz pass-through, the S960H also provides access to HDR10+, HLG, and Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range, blackout screen elimination with Quick Media Switching (QMS), Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) performance, and lag-busting Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and Quick Frame Transport (QFT). Additionally, the S960H offers Dynamic HDR to optimize the performance of HDR-capable TVs, while also delivering 8K upscaling of 4K media.
Sporting seven channels of amplification (90W, 8 ohms, 2 channels driven), the S960H can deliver 5.1.2 channels of immersive sound. Decoding options include both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, with virtual 3D sound provided by DTS Virtual:X and Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization. Overall sound quality is enhanced by Audyssey MultEQ, which now provides two calibration presets for quick switching between various listening configurations.
Much like more expensive Denon models, the S960H allows for Hi-Res Audio playback (up to 24-bit.192 kHz ALAC, FLAC, WAV, and DSD 2.8/5.6MHz) and HEOS-based access to popular streaming services such as Pandora, Spotify, Amazon Music HD, TIDAL, Qobuz, and more. Apple AirPlay 2 (including Apple Music) and Bluetooth are also supported.
Backed by a reasonably beefy amp section and important future-friendly video technologies, the AVR-S960H looks to be a great option for enthusiasts seeking performance that will last for years to come. Toss in simple setup procedures, control apps (including Audyssey’s handy MultEQ Editor app), and Google, Amazon, and Apple voice control, and the S960H definitely serves tremendous bang for the buck.
According to Denon, the S960H is scheduled to begin shipping this month (July 2020).
