(March 27, 2025) Focal is extending its Bathys headphone line with a new flagship: the Bathys MG. Designed to blend audiophile-grade performance with wireless convenience, the MG edition brings upgraded materials, refined acoustic hardware, and a fresh chestnut finish — all wrapped in a travel-ready package.

The original Bathys headphones launched in late 2022 as Focal’s first foray into Bluetooth hi-fi with Active Noise Cancellation. Since then, they’ve earned praise for offering wired DAC playback (up to 24-bit/192kHz) alongside wireless flexibility, delivering a versatile listening experience for those who value fidelity but want to cut the cord. The Bathys line expanded in 2023 with a “Dune” finish, and earlier this month, a “Deep Black” variant was announced. Now, the Bathys MG joins the lineup as the most ambitious version yet.

So what’s new?

At the core of Bathys MG are exclusive full-range drivers with magnesium "M"-shaped domes — the same ones found in Focal’s Clear MG headphones. These lightweight drivers are made in France and tuned for natural, dynamic, and highly detailed sound reproduction. Frequency response extends from 10Hz to 22kHz, and harmonic distortion is kept below 0.2% at 1kHz. Whether you're listening wirelessly over aptX Adaptive or plugged into the 1.2m USB-DAC cable, the goal is reference-grade clarity.

Comfort and design also see a notable upgrade. The MG model incorporates a magnesium yoke, aluminum brackets, and real leather on the headband. New memory foam cushions and additional padding help improve long-wear comfort without tacking on weight — the whole unit still comes in at about 12.3 ounces (350g). A subtle backlit Focal flame logo on the earcups adds a nice visual touch, and the chestnut finish gives a nod to the styling of the Clear MG without feeling overly flashy.

On the tech side, Bathys MG uses Bluetooth 5.2 and supports SBC, AAC, aptX, and aptX Adaptive codecs. Google Fast Pair makes connection simple for Android users, while iOS users can take advantage of Focal and Naim’s companion app for personalized EQ and ANC control. Speaking of ANC, the MG features new digital microphones to improve ambient noise rejection and enhance voice isolation. Battery life is consistent with the standard Bathys: 30 hours of Bluetooth + ANC playback, 35 hours via analog, and up to 42 hours in USB DAC mode. A quick 15-minute charge gives you around 5 hours of listening.

One last detail – and, likely, a detail that will fly under the radar – comes at the hands of Focal's commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly packaging materials. The Bathys MG ships in a bamboo pulp box made from sugar cane and other plant fibers — 100% natural and FSC-certified. While not as exciting as the headphones' muscle and performance capabilities, it's nice to see a brand making moves that lowers its impact on the planet.

The Bathys MG is priced at $1,299 USD ($1,699 CAD) and is available for preorder now with shipping starting May 2025. For more details, visit focal.com/products/bathys-mg.
