force 5.1 output?

I have a sound system that supports up to 7.1 LPCM. When REW is configured to use ASIO4ALL, on an HDMI out, is there a way to output only 5.1 instead of 7.1? Speaker configuration using the Windows sound control panel seems to be ignored; if I configure for 5.1, REW still outputs 7.1. The reason I ask is that a firmware update for the sound system appears to have broken 5.1 (but not 7.1) processing in a particular sound mode, and I was hoping to investigate further.

REW doesn't choose the number of channels in the connection and only sends data to the channel or channels selected as outputs. The HDMI connection carries linear PCM data for however many channels the device responses over the HDMI link say are available. Changing the compressed formats in Windows will not affect that.
