I currently own the Samsung F8500 plasma (known as the last great plasma). It has excellent black levels but I ask myself how much better is Dolby Vision or HDR.
In general is Dolby Vision an upgrade compared to any HD TV?

Displays have advanced well beyond your plasma. Pick up one of the OLED displays and you’ll see blacks similar to your plasma. You also see expanded contrast in not only white but the rest of the expanded color gamut as well. To me? It’d be a no brainer. You’d have to have sources that support all this as well.

To expand upon my quickly written response last night, HDR/Dolby Vision is the biggest leap forward for displays since HD. Resolution is a nice upgrade depending upon where you sit. But you’ll notice the increase in brightness, contrast and color from just about anywhere. It was the same with SD/HD - you’d notice it immediately.

Here’s an image from Dolby displaying the difference between the old Rec 709 format and the newer standards (P3 and 2020).

The way I like to explain it to people is that the Rec 709 is the equivalent to a softball while the newer 2020 standard would be a basketball.

@mechman thanks for the information and image. If I am looking at the image correctly basically the REC 2020 and DCI P3 is much brighter and colorful then the REC 709 correct?

That is correct.

I've been thinking on getting the Sony A80J.
