(April 15, 2025) Kaleidescape has joined the 8K Association (8KA), marking a notable step forward for a company best known for delivering high-bitrate, lossless audio and reference-grade 4K video content to premium home theaters.

This announcement doesn’t mean you’ll be downloading 8K movies tomorrow—but it certainly positions Kaleidescape to play a role in shaping what that future looks like. Currently, the company’s flagship player, the Strato V, supports a wide range of video formats and advanced processing features—but it tops out at 4K resolution. That includes playback with Dolby Vision, HDR10, and chroma up to 4:4:4 at 10 to 12-bit for resolutions up to 2160p 30fps over HDMI 2.1 with HDCP 2.3 copy protection. Of course, there’s no mention of 8K capabilities… yet.

So, what exactly is the 8K Association? It’s a non-profit consortium made up of major display, content, and technology companies, formed to promote and help standardize the 8K ecosystem—from production through delivery to consumer display. The organization’s mission is to accelerate the adoption of 8K by fostering industry collaboration and raising awareness about what the format can offer.

“Joining the 8KA positions Kaleidescape alongside other industry leaders, committed to fostering a collaborative environment, and dedicated to the advancement and standardization of 8K technology,” said Tayloe Stansbury, chairman and CEO of Kaleidescape. “As consumers demand larger screens, higher-fidelity and increasingly immersive experiences, Kaleidescape’s involvement in the 8KA will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of premium home cinema.”

The 8KA welcomed the move. “We are thrilled to welcome Kaleidescape to the 8K Association,” said Juan Reyes, Executive Director of the 8KA. “Their expertise in delivering premium home cinema solutions and their dedication to quality make them a valuable addition to our organization. Together, we will continue to advance the 8K ecosystem and bring the next generation of visual entertainment to consumers worldwide.”

It’s worth noting that this news arrives on the heels of Kaleidescape announcing two other major developments: the launch of its new Strato M player, which brings lossless audio and reference-quality 2K video to a broader audience at a lower entry point; and the company’s recent expansion into Australia, marking its first major push into the Asia-Pacific region.

While no future products were teased in today’s release, Kaleidescape’s involvement in the 8KA hints that the brand is preparing for a possible – and possibly, inevitable – shift toward higher resolution standards. And no, we likely won't see an 8K-capable Strato in the near term—but today’s announcement suggests that wheels are in motion.

I can tell one thing for sure, your NZ9 definitely can take and display a 48Gbps. I ran a 48Gbps test pattern (4K 120Hz 4:4:4) through an NZ8... no problem.

Now I'll have to go buy an 8K TV... just stop it, will ya... just stop it!
