(April 3, 2025) Dollars and cents aside, there’s something undeniably fun about a flagship launch—especially when it comes from an industry giant and carries the bones of one of the most revolutionary audio processor brands in history. Today, JBL Synthesis has unveiled the all-new SDP-80, a next-generation home cinema processor that builds on the legacy of its well-regarded predecessor, the SDP-75. Announced by HARMAN Luxury Audio Group, the SDP-80 delivers 36 channels of immersive audio processing and full HDMI 2.1 support for 8K video, positioning it squarely in the sights of high-performance home theater projects where modern format support and uncompromised flexibility are key.

“The JBL Synthesis SDP-80 is designed to push the boundaries of home cinema performance,” explains Jim Garrett, Senior Director of Product Strategy and Planning for HARMAN Luxury Audio. “With 8K video compatibility and seamless integration with JBL Synthesis systems, it provides an unparalleled level of precision and immersion. Whether it’s a dedicated home cinema or a high-performance media room, the SDP-80 is built for the most demanding enthusiasts.”

The new model brings with it eight HDMI 2.1 inputs and two outputs, all capable of 48Gbps. This means it supports 8K at 60Hz and 4K at 120Hz with HDR10, Dolby Vision, and HDCP 2.3 pass-through, among all other HDMI 2.1 functions—aligning JBL Synthesis with the top tier of video performance capabilities for future-ready home cinemas. It also places the SDP-80 in somewhat rarefied air, with native HDMI bandwidth capable of handling full 48Gbps performance.

On the audio side, the SDP-80 expands output capabilities to 36 discrete channels, supporting Dolby Atmos, DTS:X Pro, and Auro-3D formats. It includes Trinnov’s Optimizer EQ, configured with the HARMAN Target Curve and JBL loudspeaker presets. JBL says this integration ensures accurate system tuning and exceptional performance across its speaker lineup. Unfortunately, Trinnov's Waveforming technology isn't part of the package—though the hardware is capable of running Waveforming, leaving open the possibility of a future firmware upgrade.

Internally, the SDP-80 introduces a new motherboard and updated power supply for faster signal switching and enhanced overall responsiveness. A newly upgraded DAC architecture is also part of the refresh, promising more refined audio decoding and delivery.

Connectivity options extend beyond HDMI. Balanced XLR outputs, AES3 digital audio connectivity, and full support for Roon Ready music streaming are all included. The processor also integrates smoothly with major control platforms like AMX, Crestron, and Savant.

The SDP-80 isn’t just a spec bump—it represents JBL Synthesis’ effort to stay competitive and relevant in a growing field of immersive audio processors with high channel counts and evolving format support. With its combination of robust connectivity, fine-tuned performance capabilities, and deep ecosystem integration, it has the brains and brawn to hold court in a rack for years to come.

The JBL Synthesis SDP-80 will be available through authorized dealers starting later this month. For more details, visit www.jblsynthesis.com.

is this unit basically a rebranded trinnov?

Essentially. I’m not sure which features, if any, have been removed, but I do in is that JBL is really pleased with the performance they were getting from the last iteration.
