I’m actually surprised that the Resident Evil films haven’t come out on 4K UHD till now. Back in 2017 the 6th film came out on Blu-ray and 4K, but only Resident Evil Afterlife (the 4th film) accompanied it onto 4K. The rest of the movies (including the much more profitable 1st - 3rd films) didn’t even get a murmur about being released on 4K, then 3.5 years later, voila! We get a whole boxset! Sony is usually really nice about their boxsets and 4K UHD upgrades, and this 6 film set is no different. Except for the 4th and 6th film (which already came out on 4K) the movies have all gotten brand new transfers and they look STUNNING in 2160p.
To make matters even better Sony has created a great physical package to enjoy today. Each film is housed in a 2 disc flip open case (meaning no sleeves like Universal to scratch the discs!) with brand new artwork, then housed inside of a slide open box (the top lists off and the box itself looks like a classified Umbrella file). There’s a few new extras found on each disc as well (usually nothing more than a trailer and a teaser trailer, but a few of the discs actually have some in depth extras added) making this an all around awesome box set (at at the moment of this review, $54.99, less than $10 a film).

Final Score:
The Resident Evil movies are pure popcorn fun, and fun that’s not meant be taken seriously. “Check your brain at the door” is the mantra of the films, and with that in mind they’re a blast to watch. The series starts to go off the rails with the 5th and 6th films, but they’re still fun to watch as brainless monster mashes. Milla Jovovich goes all out for the flicks (they ARE her bread and butter) and the new 4K UHD releases for these films are generally GREAT (the only one that is kind of “meh” is The Final Chapter which sports the same weak video encode when it was released on 4K UHD 3 or 4 years ago). The bundle is really REALLY nice for a boxset, with a snazzy foil box that opens up to have individual flip open books for EACH film. One thing that makes the packaging nerd in me super happy is NO slip sleeves like Universal is prone to do, so no scratched discs! As a huge fan of the Resident Evil universe for the sheer popcorn fun of it all, these upgrades (again, sans The Final Chapter) are all massive upgrades over the aging Blu-rays, and the new artwork is really nice as well. I’d definitely put it down as a “you gotta grab this” for the fans as Sony has gone all out on this one. Great buy.
