(October 17, 2017) German headphone manufacturer Sennheiser recently announced a new open-back over-ear model. Dubbed the HD 660 S ($499), the headphone is said to be an improved version of its popular predecessor (HD 650) thanks to a new transducer that delivers lower harmonic distortion and a more natural and uncolored sound.

Sennheiser says the HD 660 S has tremendous flexibility due to its low impedance (150 ohms). This allows modern owners to enjoy listening sessions with both high-end reference quality amps and mobile hi-res players, which is great news for audiophiles looking to take advantage of smaller sources that lack a dedicated headphone amplifier.

"The HD 660 S reflects and enriches today's increasingly multifaceted audiophile experience. It frees listeners to enjoy music to the fullest--whether digital or analog, on a mobile device or on a home HiFi system," says Sennheiser’s Head of Portfolio Management Audiophile, Axel Grell. "The headphones deliver an exceptionally accurate and transparent sound that also has an expressiveness that immerses you in every emotion and nuance of music."

Sennheiser’s new proprietary transducer incorporates a precision stainless steel fabric that’s adapted to the contour of the diaphragm. This fabric offers improved control of the diaphragm’s movements. And the company highlights that each transducer is hand selected and carefully paired to a strict +/-1dBt tolerance when comparing one ear cup to the other. The inclusion of extremely light aluminum voice coils adds another layer of refinement and the highest impulse fidelity.

The company says the HD 660 S fits as good as it sounds, designed with user comfort in mind. Long listening sessions will feel effortless with the headphone’s lightweight construction, elliptical ear cups, and thickly padded band.

The HD 660 S is delivered with a several different connectivity options, including a 6.35mm stereo plug and a balanced 4.4 Pentaconn stereo plug. A 6.35mm to 3.5mm adapter is also included.

The HD 660 S is pegged to begin shipping mid-October, which means it’s available to buy now! For more information, visit Sennheiser on the web.
