Surprise! Samsung Shocks CES 2018 with “The Wall,” A Modular MicroLED TV System
(Samsung)(January 8, 2018) Samsung has never been shy about making a splash, and the company’s arrival at CES 2018 has been akin to an epic cannonball plunge from a high dive. Today, Samsung official introduced a fully modular TV system called “The Wall.”
The Wall uses MicroLED technology to shed restrictions of display size and form, drawing from design philosophies used to create large LED commercial signage for public spaces. Unlike current LCD televisions, a MicroLED display utilizes self-emitting micrometer scale LEDs comprised of red, green, and blue pixels, each serving as its own light source. Gone is the need for color filters or backlighting.
Because The Wall’s pixels are self-emissive, they can be turned on and off, allowing for pure blacks and amazing levels of contrast. The pixels also offer superior off-axis viewing performance. And, most interestingly, the MicroLED system also avoids issues with ghosting and image retention.
The Wall’s panels or “tiles” are bezel-less, allowing them to be purchased and pieced together to create screen sizes up to a massive 146-inches. Wall systems are not only scalable by size, but also can be made into specific shapes to suit nearly any application.
The Wall is a true 4K display that also offers both HDR10 and HDR10+ performance, making it an extremely tantalizing technology. Samsung says its official public launch will be soon after CES. Pricing and performance specifications will be announced at that time.
