I have been using an Avid Mbox Mini for my audio interface with a MacBook Pro. For the life of me, I can’t figure out how to set up the loop through for timing measurements, etc. I have tried coming out of the left output into the left input. I have tried coming out of the left output into the right input. I’ve made sure the program is set accordingly for timing reference and loop through. Has anyone else successfully done this? The Mbox has an option to route inputs directly to the outputs, which I assume I don’t want due to feedback. Or you can turn the pot on the selector to only output through the computer. I still get feedback. I can only assume Protools has some sort of software thing that makes this possible that I’m unaware of. I know this should be straightforward, but what’s going on?

The loopback connection goes on the unused channel pair, so if you are using R for output and R for mic input the loopback would go from left output to left input. You definitely want the mix pot turned all the way to playback so none of the input is being mixed back into the output. If you are still getting feedback with that then does sound like there is some software mixing going on that needs to be tracked down.
