What if I have a 15-bands GEQ not in REW

Hi there, new to the forum and to REW from around Milan, Italy.

Like many many others, I've only recently come across REW - this incredible piece of fine sw tool - and started playing with it, with the ultimate goal to tune my (upgraded) car system.

I've just installed a DSP and wanted to measure, and then tune, with REW.

I've seen the auto-EQ function, but I can't find an EQ like mine. I have a 15-bands GEQ and none of the pre-configured ones has 15 bands.

I was wondering how to proceed in this case ?

Shall I contact the REW developers, provide my EQ specs and ask (hope) for the implementation of a model like mine, or is there any guide on how one should select the EQ among the provided ones, if none is the model one owns ?

A 2/3-octave EQ is not the best tool for system tuning – it’s more of a sophisticated tone control. That said, the best way to use it with REW, or any equalizer the platform doesn’t support, it to utilize the RTA feature and make adjustments in real time.

Hi Wayne, many thanks for your reply !

I realized I made a mistake. My 15 bands equalizer is a parametric one, not a GEQ. Does it change things ? I assumed it was OK since I can change the frequency ay which I increase or decrease levels.
 
Yes it changes things in some ways. If it’s fully parametric, meaning it has adjustable bandwidth settings in addition to frequency center and gain, then it’s useful for system tuning.

The only downside is that with so many filters the temptation is there to utilize every single one chasing every little ripple in response. Just stick with correcting the worst deviations in response – that typically gets the best results. “Tiny” filters with narrow bandwidth and only a couple dB adjustment are pretty much inaudible with program material anyway, so no good reason to go there.

However, you’ll still need to use the RTA to tweak it.

1. Choose the file you want to use to create the EQ file.
2. Click the EQ button at top, right of center.
3. Click the 'EQ Filters' button at top center.
4. Uncheck enough of the filter rows to match your equipment.
5. Set the other parameters to suit your needs.
6. Click "Match response to target"
6a. I don't know how to fix the Q factor. You may need to change each of the 15 band to match the Q of your equipment (changes will update the graph in real-time), and then make manual adjustments to frequency and gain to match what you want. I believe this will get you closer to ideal than manual tuning (which I tried with lackluster results).
7. Click "Export filter settings as text if you want to use eqAPO, etc.
