Xbox One Consoles to Get Dolby Vision Support
(Dolby, Microsoft)(July 13, 2018) Microsoft recently announced its preparing to add Dolby Vision support to both Xbox One S and Xbox One X gaming consoles as part of a forthcoming “System Update 1810.” According to the company’s blog post on Xbox Wire, the initial rollout of Dolby Vision support will be for streaming apps only. That means Xbox One will be one of three devices (along with Apple TV 4K and Chromecast Ultra) to offer support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos content.
According to Microsoft, parts of the forthcoming update are already in the hands of Xbox Insiders for pre-launch testing; more features slotted for testing will begin to appear in the coming weeks. No time table for an official public launch has been released.
Dolby Vision offers vastly superior High Dynamic Range (HDR) performance over HDR10, which is the only HDR platform currently supported by Xbox. Utilizing encoded metadata, Dolby Vision adjusts brightness on a frame-by frame or scene-by-scene basis, while also opening avenues to 12-bit color. While Microsoft’s blog post specifically highlights a Premium Netflix subscription as necessary for access to Dolby Vision content, it doesn’t elude to any other sources. Therefore, Dolby Vision content from services such as Vudu may not be compatible.
Other features offered in the System Update 1810 include:
- Support for five additional languages (Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, Swedish, and Dutch)
- An Australian version of English Language for Narrator
- Customizable avatars for users and their friends
- An expanded Search feature that shows games you own
