I've recently been EQing my HT using the ASIO4All driver and a timing reference. Sometimes when I take a measurement there's a delay or distortion while the ASIO driver (or perhaps the processor) "wakes up". When that happens I click cancel so that I can re-start the measurement. However, doing that closes the measurement window. This is especially frustrating if the timing reference doesn't fire as you can't even just wait for the measurement to finish being taken.

I get that cancel when there's no measurement being taken closes the window, but if one is in progress and the cancel button is clicked, the window shouldn't close.

It would mean that you'd have to click it twice if you wanted to stop a measurement and close the window, but I suspect that most instances of cancelling a measurement would be to re-start it or to change some settings. Maybe the button label could change between close when there's no measurement taking place and cancel when one's running?

Let me know if that makes sense.

Brilliant software, by the way, unbelievably comprehensive and useful.

I get that distortion too... and I suppose everyone does. What would be nice is to figure out a way to prevent it so we don't have to hit cancel.

I thought the delay option might have been useful, have REW send out a signal and then wait a while for everything to perk up, but that destroyed my timing checks.
I figured John not being the author of Asio4All it was a little unfair to ask him to fix that!

It's good to know I'm not alone in the distortion. Am I right that it's Asio?

I really don't know what causes it... just know it happens frequently and I have to start the measurement over. Sometimes it happens more than once and I have to go to another speaker and back to the speaker I am measuring to get it stop.

When a bunch of us are together testing/evaluating speakers at my home, Wayne has the same thing happen on his computer. Never heard anyone else bring it up before now... at least that I've paid attention to. I'm not even sure why I've never mentioned it to John. I think I just assumed it was something in my setup.

I can confirm it's not you :)
When time aligning multiple speakers it can be really frustrating. Measure, cancel, measure, check results, adjust distance in the AVR, measure, cancel... etc.
I should probably have asked for the fix before I time aligned an EQd a 7.2 system.

Maybe John can shed some light on it for us and help us figure out a way to overcome the issue.

Which REW version are you running? The V5.20 beta versions play a dither signal while capturing the noise floor to give processors and the like time to lock on to the audio signal.

I have changed the Cancel button behaviour for the next beta.

I have to admit that I have not tried with the latest version.

I have procrastinated setting up my new pre-pro... I really need to get that done, then I'll be doing some more measurements.

I’m using 5.20 beta 12. I keep up to date with the latest betas. It happened in beta 10 too I believe.

Thank you for the change.
