You mentioned in the podcast how we should contact @Robert Zohn if we are in the market for a TV. Do vendors have the panel information for the TVs they have in stock? Is there something in the serial number, etc. that would show that information?

 

[Todd Anderson]

From what I've heard, Samsung isn't earmarking that kind of information for public consumption... whether or not they'll tell retailers that kind of detail is something Robert will have to fill in. He's indicating that he'll know... how, not sure.

We throughly test and evaluate all of the new TVs as they arrive. Tell me which Samsung model and what you want to learn about the TV?

 

[Todd Anderson]

Well, the S90D, which we talked about in the pod, but also in a news article a few weeks ago, is being manufactured with both WOLED and QDOLED panels, apparently in a fashion that won't be identifiable to consumers... you had indicated in the news thread that your customers would know which panel type they were receiving...?

 

[Robert Zohn]

Thank you Todd! I'll test Samsung's S90D in all screen sizes and post my findings here.

From what Samsung tells me only the 42", 48", and 83" S90T TVs will have LG Display's WRGB OLED panels, so the 55", 65" and 77" S90D TVs should have Samsung Display's 3rd generation of the QD OLED panels.

That's what I would have assumed, but a South Korean technology site is reporting that they are using both W-OLED and QD-OLED panels in the S90D line, reportedly at LG Display's request...

Next time you're talking with Samsung corporate, perhaps you could see if they respond to you about it. I haven't gotten an official confirmation from them, myself. But the SK site, The Elec, is a legit industry source.

I have several 77S90D on order and I'll check them throughly when they arrive.

Thank you both! Full disclosure Robert I just got a new TV a couple years ago and am not in the market yet. I have always wondered how you could tell which type of panel a certain display has and if there was some type of “industry secret” that disclosed that info, such as something in the serial number. However, it sounds like it is discovered in testing, not in a code number or anything like that.

I'll be testing and reviewing all of the new 2024 TVs with our professional calibrator and when we are testing for the OLED panel type I will pay close attention and post here on how he determines the OLED panel display technology.

@Mike Schramm, if you have the right equipment, you can look at the subpixel structure and see what kind of panel it is. WOLED panels use four rectangular subpixels in a red, white, blue, and green configuration. QD-OLEDs use a triangular red, green, blue structure.
