I have a finished basement I use for music rehearsal and hobby recording. In the various REW guides, I only see mic placement suggestions for the "listening spot" which makes sense in a home theatre or mixing control room, but if I plan to have microphones in a wide variety of locations in the room when recording, where do I place the mic to get measurements in REW?

Where would I put the monitor for the sine sweeps? Everywhere a drum might be? That could be hundreds of places x hundreds of places mics might be placed.
Do you just grab as many as you can and hope for the best?

Good point :) Measure in a variety of places in the room, making sure the monitor is not close to the mic (at least a couple of metres away).

What is the point of this exercise? IOW, what are you trying to determine from it?

Wouldn't it be to find out what the best response locations would be for the various mics? Position x has a better response than position y. Avoid the null spots in the room.

Of course that would change with several bodies in the room.
