Dirac questions t758v3i
I have front height speakers for Atmos
What is the difference between speaker settings "dolby enabled front" vs
Dolby enabled surround"? The latter has a message "dirac live disabled, calibration doesn't include this speaker/mode"

Thanks

Could it be that the height speakers were not connected and enabled during Dirac calibration?

I have a T758 v3, Any attempted config change from that which was active when Dirac calibration was run will give that error message.

No they are hooked up properly

Hello, the "Dolby Enable front" is the front Atmos speakers, and Dolby enabled Surround is the back atmos speakers. If you do not have back atmos speakers in your system, you have to leave that setting off. If you added more speakers to your system, you need to run Dirac again and upload the new profile. The message you reference there means when you ran Dirac, it did not have the same speaker configuration as it does at the moment. Check your speaker configuration settings, and make sure it matches the speakers you have. Anything that is enabled there, but does not match the speakers you have on the system, will cause Dirac to give you that error. I have noticed that when I do a factory reset, the back surround is enabled by default.

That's pretty much the long version of what Wayne stated... you didn't have those speakers connected when you ran Dirac Live, or at least Dirac didn't think you did... something was not the same.

I am thinking that my height speakers is called "dolby enabled front speakers" so dirac is reading this not dolby surround that I had the setting set for

No disrespect intended. We often have to answer a question without knowing the poster's experience level.

I am looking at my NAD On Screen Display. Assuming our OSD's are the same (we do have slightly different models), there are Height 1 and Height 2 speaker "Positions" and six "Mode" settings that Height 1 can be set to, leaving the four remaining Mode settings for Height 2. I honesty don't know why all those modes are available, or what they do differently. NAD's documents are notoriously brief about such things. Maybe for DTS configuration?

I believe your last response is correct, since a mode setting was changed after Dirac calibration, the configuration is no longer recognized by Dirac and the Dirac Live filters are turned off, no matter how logical that change might seem to the user. I would use the Dolby Enabled Front and Dolby Enabled Back modes for Height 1 and Height 2.

I just got a firmware update, did you? If so, I would run it before proceeding.

I think some of those modes are newer, I had not even run across them before.

Trying to go from memory here... I think “Dolby enabled” is referring to a speaker that also has a driver on top to “bounce” the atmos channel off the ceiling.
IIRC Dirac doesn’t work with these if the mic picks up any direct sound (highly likely) It will get the timing wrong, calculating the delay from the straight line speaker to mic distance instead of speaker to ceiling to mic distance.

Thanks John, yes "Dolby Enabled" is pretty well documented as you describe it. So that leaves "Top" to mean "Ceiling.Mount" which is far from intuitively obvious.

I am looking for more info on the subject.

With some help from the Dolby Setup Guides, here is the way I see it, using the settings available in my NAD T 758 v3.

Dolby ATMOS speaker setup with NAD T 758 v3:

Dolby Enabled = a driver on "top" (see my confusion?) of a speaker with Height sound bouncing off the ceiling and then reaching the listener indirectly.
Top = ceiling mounted driver with Height sound reaching the listener directly.

Dolby Enabled and Top Modes can both exist in the same system setup.

Confusing Modes Nomenclature:
Dolby Enabled Surround and Top Middle
Dolby Enabled Back and Top Rear

With two Height speakers total, they are defined by:
NAD Position Setting - Height 1.
The six possible Mode settings are:
  • Dolby Enabled Front or Top Front - two Height speakers in front of the listener
  • Dolby Enabled Surround or Top Middle - two Height speakers roughly even with the listener
  • Dolby Enabled Back or Top Rear - two Height speakers behind the listener
With four Height speakers total, two are defined by Height 1 and the other two are defined by:
NAD Position Setting - Height 2.
Any of the five unassigned Modes above can be used.

Note:
  1. Although I do not see it stated as a requirement, I would recommend Height 1 speakers being physically in front of Height 2 speakers.
  2. Although it is allowed in the NAD settings, it is not recommended to use both of any of these pairs of settings in the same system:
    • Do not use both the Dolby Enabled Front and Top Front Modes in the same system.
    • Do not use both the Dolby Enabled Surround and Top Middle Modes in the same system.
    • Do not use both the Dolby Enabled Back and Top Rear Modes in the same system.

Wow thanks for the help! So by the sounds of things dolby enabled front (height 1) according to NAD is the setting I need for front height atmos?

If you mentioned this before, I missed it... If your Height 1 speakers are the type that are built into the top of your front main speakers and bounce the Height sound off the ceiling to the listener, then yes you would use the Dolby Enabled Front mode for Height 1. If your Height 1 speakers are ceiling mounted toward the front of the room, then you would use the Top Front mode for the Height 1.

If anyone was confused by my post #10 above, so was I. It had a few major errors in it.

It has been reworked and is now, I believe, correct. It will be added tot he end of my T 758 v3 Review.
