Class D is problematic as the negative output is usually not grounded and won't be happy connected to ground.

Well then you can probably say that it was due to the 1k working resistance. Since it is common practice in circuit development to separate the masses, I have done this. Of course it doesn't necessarily make sense in this application, at least not with 1k. I've only got a Class AB PA amp and I don't think I want to connect it to the circuit because something will probably break. Maybe I can get a hold on a Class A amp...
Thanks for the help and if anyone here wants to try the whole thing with a Class D amp I think that's good info.
