Just curious, does anyone know if you can get 5.1 programming from Roku i.e., from the Hulu, Netflix, Prime Video, Showtime etc. channels?

Regards,
Wayne A. Pflughaupt

Yes... it has Dolby Digital, but I'm not sure if they are doing Atmos yet. It's been a while since I had one, but it was doing DD when I had it.

Yes to 5.1 on Netflix and Prime and movies on vudu. Yes to atmos programming too.
What I’ve not come across yet is anything more than stereo with any of the “TV” streaming services using a Roku or Apple TV.

Thanks guys!

Sounds like you're referring to TVs that receive streaming? Good to know. We'll be using a little Roku box.

Wayne

Sorry for not being more clear. I’m referring to services like sling, YouTube tv, spectrum, and Hulu (from a couple years ago) only offering a stereo signal. Need a cable or satellite box for 5.1.

When a series eventually makes it To Netflix or Prime it is made available in 5.1.

I believe all of the 4K Roku solutions also support 5.1. The entry level models are still only pcm and stereo I believe.

Good point – probably should have mentioned that we would be using the bottom-of-the-line model. But we’ll upgrade if needed, as I feel it’d be worth it to get 5.1.

Hulu does not do 5.1 only stereo

If it’s got hdmi it’s 5.1 capable. Even the least expensive model.

This is the issue. It’s not a question of hardware but of the content provider making 5.1 available.
There’s a lot of 5.1 and atmos available but then there are some surprises, like Hulu.

Right - I figured there would be some channels that didn't do 5.1. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't a "no 5.1 across the board" situation.

Wayne
