It can indeed make a difference... unless it's down-firing. When you face it out from the wall the driver can move the length of the box. I was able to get a different response with all four facing positions with my SB16-Ultra even in the same footprint because each direction changed the distance from one wall or another. It's not always drastic, but it's definitely different.
Oh I totally get that Sonnie. Depending on the size of the subwoofer enclosure, rotating your SB16 180 degrees would move the sub's acoustic center by 18-20". That would certainly be a sufficient change to impact the subwoofer's interaction with room modes.
My point was that with horizontally oriented sub-bass drivers (and if we set aside slot-loading effects of facing the driver closely into a wall or the floor)- if you rotate the subwoofer cabinet around the acoustic center of the driver, rather than around the cabinet center- it really matters very little which direction it is facing. In any event, the dual opposed drivers of my Submersives mean that the acoustic center actually coincides with the cabinet center.
