Using REW / MiniDSP and Trinnov Amethyst

Hello all,

I have a Trinnov Amethyst which is doing correction for my main stereo set up which is 2.2 stereo ie mains (Yamaha Ns2000) and subs (two Wilson Benesch Torus).

I also have two REL studio ii subs which are connected to an LFE output from my Kuro media box via a miniDSP 2x4HD.

I want to ty to get to a 2.4 system ie stereo with 4 subs using REW to optimise the subs

I could connect the two miniDSP inputs to the two sub outputs from the Trinnov and then use the miniDSP to align the subs before presenting them to the Trinnov for room correction. The question is whether anyone else is using a Trinnov with a miniDSP in this way please?

Thoughts are to

• Match the left / right front and rears as pairs but this means two different types of sub
• Match front and rears as pairs and then use the Trinnov to match the two channels L/R but this means that either the left or right channel is coming from the back of the room rather than the front.
• Match all 4 subs in the miniDSP and let the Trinnov optimize the system as a 2.1 set up but this leaves an unused channel.

Are there any users with relevant experience who’d like to comment please?

I am writing with translator, hope everything is understandable.
I have an Altitude16 myself, but it's basically the same principle. Since I have previously operated all other preamps with DSP's, perhaps I can help you. Unfortunately, 3 different subwoofers are not perfect.
I would proceed as follows.
You want to use all four subwoofers via the 2x4HD?
If so
-Create a new preset without room correction
-Assign channels
-Adjust subwoofers to each other using REW and set rough eq's. But only the strong modes, the rest is done by the Trinnov itself.
-Adjust subwoofer to front delay in the 2x4HD with Xo's
-Perform calibration (speakers and subwoofer)

(Question, as I did not fully understand this. Do you want to adjust the subwoofers on the left side to the front left? Or do you want to control the front subwoofers together and the rear ones together?)

If you have two subwoofers at the front and two at the rear.
I would put the same brands in the front and different ones in the rear. And let it run as a pseudo DBA (if you want to call it that) I myself have 4x B&W DB1 and it works very well. Even if it's not according to the guidelines. The whole thing works together at the front and at the back for left and right.

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply to my thread.

I am still working on it and your input is appreciated. I have two Wilson Bensch Torus subs up front and two REL Studio iii subs at the back. I am using the miniDSP to control them as pairs as you suggest but am far from what i think can be achieved. I will report back when i get time with some images.

Great, then I'll wait until you get in touch.

If I may make a recommendation.
Set the DSP so that you first make a full range measurement of the speakers.
Everything with time aligmend.
Always front left LS as Ref LS.

Use the right speaker as a subwoofer in the DSP by only activating the subwoofers and deactivating the front speaker for the moment.

sub front left without front speakers 20-20 000
sub front right without front speakers 20-20 000
sub rear left without front speakers 20-20 000
sub rear right without front speakers 20-20 000

Please also from the front
Left without subwoofer 20-20 000
Right without subwoofer 20-20 000

Please invert the rear subwoofers right from the start.
Make sure that the phase is set to 0 on all subwoofers and that they are both on the same volume. If possible, deactivate all eqs on the subwoofers.
We set the phase etc. on the DSP.
When measuring, make sure that all measurements are equally loud.
So that we can first determine how loud your subs are.
We also need to see whether the front left and right start at the same time. Always in relation to the seat.
The same with the rear subwoofers

I assume that you have a microphone and the respective calibration (90°)
And that you have set the measurement settings correctly.
If you have any questions, please let me know.

I would place the more powerful subwoofers in the front, as you don't need as much power in the back. These only absorb.

Once we have these measurements, i would first adjust the subwoofers.
volume, peaks and dips.

Then try to complete the DBA.
Then connect the subs to the front.
To do this, we look at the possible crossover frequency.
Once we have this, we put them together.

What else would be interesting
-what does the room look like?
-what is the distance between the subwoofers?
-room size
-open or closed room
are the subwoofers free-standing or in the corner?

This information can be very helpful if there are problems.
my room is very symmetrical and completely acoustically treated.
It was very easy there. It could be very different for you.
