Okay, we watched this last night.

The 4K is a slight improvement over the HD version in Kaleidescape. There is very limited need for HDR or Dolby Vision. And the audio sounds exactly like the mix on the bluray.

This was a waste of $30 IMO. I will likely keep it on the shelf and go to the Kaleidescape version when I want to watch, based on the convenience. There's not enough gains on this disc to make it worthwhile IMO. Really shocking considering all the drooling about the video encode when this was released. I wonder if that group of reviewers had actually ever seen the blu-ray or if they just wanted to make the biggest noise about a Shout! release that is still not available on Kaleidescape.

Disappointing. Save yourself a few bucks and stick with the bluray.
I'm now glad I didn't pull the trigger on that steelbook. It is disappointing to hear that though!

If you don't have the movie in your collection already, but the Steelbook. If you have the blu-ray, I felt the difference was negligible. Perhaps the Dolby Vision image on a panel would be a better experience than the HDR10 on a projector.

Well that just ruined my evening… Travis!

I need to check it out, but my motivation is severely dinged.

I think @Michael Scott gave it a fairly positive review…

you would be correct. the HDR replication is not that great. it has some distinct NIT issues and contrast is off. The DV looks much better on my display than when I used my HDR only Sony X800

I am surprised you didn't see much difference over the Blu-ray, as I always felt the BR was subpar with too much artifacting and some compression issues which the 4K fixed.

however, while the upgrade over the Blu-ray is very solid, this is not a film that's going to shock and awe you. It was always a very "dull" looking film and I don't think even a major restoration is going to do much for it as it was that typical late 80s, early 90s flat look. But to be fair, this was taken from a fresh scan of the interpositive, and hasn't had a new take from the OCN yet, which could explain it not showing as much of an upgrade as possible. The audio will sound exactly like the Blu-ray becuse it IS the exact same track as the Blu-ray

I wasn't sure what to expect, but it's one of my favorite movies of all time, so I finally gave in and bought the UHD disc, since Shout! doesn't make many of its titles available on Kaleidescape (annoying but understandable, not even sure how many of their disc titles they have digital distribution rights for).

It's definitely not loaded with bold colors or even dark contrast. The HDR10 image looked good, but nothing substantially above and beyond the Kaleidescape HD version. The grain structure is fully intact in the UHD, which is fantastic. It does look very filmic.

Now you have me thinking I need to grab a different UHD player to grab the DV layer, since my Lumagen now has built-in LLDV capability...

oh yeah, it's never been a "colorful" film. it has that early 90s blue and gray tinge to everything.
also, the HDR looking "meh" has been an ANNOYING thing with studios who include Dolby Vision. It's almost as if they're just slap dashing the HDR10 application and putting all the effort into the DV layer. I've seen this more and more with some of the studios (Kino Lorber is a big one doing this, as is Warner) where they seem to act like the HDR10 layer is an afterthought. It's annoying because a well done HDR10 movie is NEARLY indistinguishable from a good DV movie (Sony's encodes are amazing for both), but again, it feels like the techs said "eh, everyone just wants the DV, who cares about the HDR10".

IMO the colors are much better on the UHD, they are kind of dull on the BD, there seems to be a bit of more resolution but the colors seem much better on the UHD.

I went to visit my g/f today who lives 105 minutes down the road from me at highway speeds. We always go "treasure hunting" as she puts it at the 2nd hand stores. I comb thru the music and BluRays and this what I took home with me. Similar post will appear for music aquisition. :)

I've watched that movie so many times I can quote most of it.

"Nobody follow us, or I'll kill myself and then her!"
