Saw one of my favorite bands last night, RIDE. Back in my high school days I collected releases by Creation Records out of England and RIDE popped up with three EPs in 1990 and an LP landing in 1991. They came to the US to support the release and played a small club in Wash DC... I coaxed a friend to go see them on a school night. That would have been my senior year.
We got to the club about 3 hours early and sat in a hallway outside the venue's main doors. No one else was there. My friend began to question my early arrival logic... We're all alone! And, to be honest, I was beginning to question myself. BUT... we were rewarded by these young RIDE lads as they played a sound check that lasted about 45 min. Song after song. I was on cloud 9. We couldn't see them... but we heard it.
Of course, the hallway eventually filled up, but we were first in line and got our spots center stage... literally leaning on the stage... and the show blew my mind.
RIDE has remained a staple for me. My favorite album is "Going Blank Again"... and I've seen RIDE play 6-ish times over the years, including last night. They're running the second year of a reunion tour and apparently have a new LP coming out in March. And last night they played their first LP, Nowhere, from start to finish and it was killer. It's music that needs to be heard live. They attacked the stage like a buzzsaw. Took me right back to 1991.
Love it, and love the fact that they can still ignite that raw, powerful, growling musical spirit that grabbed me and rocked my world back in my youth. Great stuff.
