Whiskey Lovers

Well, update for @Todd Anderson ... I tried Blantons the other night at a whiskey tasting event where we each brought our favorite bottles to sample....

I like it, but wasn't SUPER impressed. Honestly I like the 4 Roses Single barrel better. Blantons is just TOO soft and smooth for my tastes. Especially when I did a direct comparison against Bookers and Willet Pot Reserve... the Willet is amazing, but the Bookers takes the cake. Wildly complex and spicy. Probably the single best bourbon I've ever had . Strong rye mash with caramel and licorice, with soft hints of leather on the backside. Nice rye spice burn on the tongue too

I have to say, I've lost my taste for Wild Turkey 101 after all these years. For YEARS it was my go to "budget" brand that I would use for sipping on the rocks or mixing for a whiskey sour (sorry, I can't afford $40-$60 bottles ALL the time), but I tried it again tonight head to head against my Old Grand Dad 100 bottled in bond, and the difference is remarkable. I'd take the Old grand dad 100 any day of the week. Hard part is actually FINDING it, as I can only find one place in town who carries it.

I don't care much for Blanton's either. Too sweet and too much vanilla for me. A friend told me to try the Canadian whisky Forty Creek and it has that same sweet vanilla flavor.

Gave the Japanese Scotch a try this week. I bought a bottle of Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt. It is very good! Starts out smooth and then you can taste a smoky oak taste along with hint of fruitiness. Well worth the money.

nice, how much did a bottle run you?

$55, slightly more than what I usually spend on an 18 year old Shieldag ($47).

that's not shabby at all

I was really hoping to find a Hibiki there. There was a spot for it but they were all gone.

Hibiki is almost impossible to get down here. Even when they say "I can special order it", they normally get cancelled

Time to go drink some Nikka!

Huh... surprised!!! Blantons is my favorite go to! Its smoothness is probably what I love most about it.

I do like that 4 Roses Single, too. That's super tasty!

probably to do with the fact that I tend to lean towards really spicy bourbons. Something with a high rye mashbill. Blantons was GOOOOD, don't get me wrong, but it was almost too sweet and smooth. didn't have the heat I usually look for.

What? You don't enjoy a snoot full of Laphroaig? That's definitely an acquired taste.

How I got started down this rabbit hole, Laphroaig. Super peaty.

I actually like Laphroaig.. Islay and Speyside scotches are the only scotches I can really drink.

No can do most of that Scotch... doesn't hit my tastebuds right.

same here. I can stand a few, but I'm a bourbon man to the core. Just doesn't hit the taste buds right as you said. I do like Canadian Whiskey though

I never had any type of whiskey so I am curious to learn what to get and what folks in general like. Thanks for the heads up. Lots of good options.

Interesting, no pictures.

Very Nice Kentucky Whiskey.. Thanks for sharing the pic. :)

Excellent place to start.

Came across something new yesterday, or at least it's new around here. Larceny Bourbon. I kinda like it, nice smooth, caramely, butterscotchy, and then a little bit of a spice kick. Anyone else have a chance to try this?

yeah, Larceny is a wheated bourbon. Much like Weller 12 year, or Maker's mark. I'm a fan of it for $25 range for sure. a soft caramel and butterscotch is a very accurate description. Much lower Rye count than others I drink, so not nearly as spicy on the tongue

Nice pic. Thanks for sharing. :)
