Movie Roll Call: What have you seen lately?

Just finished watching all 8 seasons of Game of Thrones 4K box set.

First time I’d watched the show. Loved every minute of it. Very enjoyable.
Video quality was excellent... Atmos was middling for the first 5 seasons, then really sprung to life for the last three. I thought the audio mix in a few of the last episodes was reference quality.

Anyhow, I know I’m late to the game (no pun intended)... but if you can stand some blood, weird sexual situations, clever lying and deceit, and excellent character development/story writing... this is a great box set to bring into your home theater.

I watched a handful of episodes outside my theater (on phone streaming via HBO MAX)...the presence and the emotion was definitely minimized. The big screen/immersive sound presentation definitely amplifies the story.
Nobody was safe.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies Extended Edition UHD

I just finished 'Behind Her Eyes' on Netflix.

If you enjoy dramas with twists and turns this is your next (short) binge series! : )

I Care a Lot on Netflix. Very entertaining.

LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring UHD

For some reason I don't think this is anywhere near as good as The Hobbit UHD when it comes UHD. Several CGI scenes seemed soft to me.

Watched Monster Hunter. Lots of action and great picture quality. Can’t comment on audio so much as I am still relegated too watching movies on a 50” tv and 5.1 audio.

News of the World, how can you go wrong with Tom Hanks?

Watched Underwater last night and thought it was great. Possessor last weekend was disappointing.

Judas and the Black Messiah (HBO Max) was the best film I’ve seen since the pandemic blew up the new release schedule.

We’ve been binging Search Party, which started really good and jumped the shark somewhere in season 3.

I’ve been watching Warrior, which is really good stuff if you like martial arts, sexytime and killer audio.

LOTR: The Two Towers UHD Extended Edition

I really don't think that the UHD version of LOTR add that much. Some of the scenes are pretty soft.

I've got that one on my list. Looks like I'll be moving it up!

So, after coaxing my wife into watching The Lighthouse (which we both were *meh* on), I lured her back into the home theater with the promise of a guaranteed good movie: The Green Book.

Neither of us had watched it... it's been sitting in my collection awaiting its turn. We loved it. Fantastic movie.

And I have something to admit... Viggo Mortensen is a star. Crimson Tide (he played Weps) is one of my Top 10 favorites. But, what a career he's had! 60 films! Staring roles. And he was great in Green Book.

I still haven’t seen that one. Might have to check it out.

excellent flick... I thought the audio was 5-star.

Judas and the Black Messiah - I'd agree with thrillcat on this one. Probably the best new release since the pandemic hit.

Is this on HBO Max?

Last night we watched “I Care A Lot” on Netflix. I give it 3 of 5 “meh”s.

It didn’t have any sympathetic characters. Everyone had a dark side.

I really enjoyed it. Deserved at least 4/5 for me.

We just finished “Promising Young Woman”.

Redbox only had the DVD. I didn’t want to pay Best Buy $25 for a 5.1 Blu-ray, but we’ve been anxious to see it for months, so I paid $20 on iTunes for a UHD Dolby Vision Dolby Atmos version.

Great movie. Completely different, but every bit as solid as Judas and the Black Messiah.

The bass. Holy moly. There were a couple times I thought the room might collapse. Probably the most extreme bass I’ve heard in a mix in my room. And that was on a STREAMING version. A lossless version may just bring the ceiling down.

A+ highly recommended. And the Blu-ray received low marks for video, but I thought the UHD digital version looked fantastic.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League

I’ve always wondered why DC didn’t do more with their side of the comic book realm when it came to the Justice League. I loved watching Justice League cartoons with my kids as they grew up and I could never understand why DC didn’t keep kicking out movies around this aspect of their ‘universe’. It appears they’re starting to now. This remake/reshoot was quite the step up from the original. Not just in length, but in story line. We loved it. Didn’t notice it was 4 hours long outside of taking a short intermission about halfway through.

My only complaint? 4:3 is not a movie format. Period. Come join us in the 21st Century Zack! To be honest though, it wasn’t the distraction I thought it would be. Noticed it right away, got annoyed, and then I enjoyed the movie.

I started it last night, got 2:20 into it. I agree, big improvement over the original. And I agree, 4:3 is terrible, but it's the IMAX format...but you just don't release IMAX format for home.

I guess at least he kept a single aspect ratio through the whole thing instead of switching all over the place like Nolan.

In honor of @phillihp23 recent purchase, I watched Godzilla last night. I'd seen bits and pieces of it before but never the whole thing. Really enjoyed the LFE on this one! The movie itself was ok. Streamed it from HBO Maxx.

Watched Monster Hunter last night on my new JVC NX9 and it was an unbelievably gorgeous picture. I have never seen anything look this good right out of the box. Wow! And the movie had the HDR scenes for it too. Thoroughly enjoyed the movie... a keeper and super fun watch.

I'll probably watch Godzilla tonight.
