Movie Roll Call: What have you seen lately?

Licorice Pizza - this one was nominated for several awards too and to be honest, I’m not exactly sure why. It’s a decent movie and a decent storyline but there must have been a lack of competition in order for this one to get recognized. The acting was very good so maybe that was it. Worth a watch as it’s streaming on Prime right now. Neither of these last two are worth a purchase IMO.
We loved Licorice Pizza. If you read through the IMDB Trivia section it makes it even more enjoyable, knowing the background behind a lot of the scenes, the Hollywood legend, etc.

We’ll generally look at IMDB or Rotten Tomatoes before watching an unknown movie, but only for the score. These last two we didn’t do anything as they were on our radar from the Oscars and the Golden Globes. They were good movies, but I wouldn’t buy a hard copy of them. And of the two, we definitely preferred Belfast over LP.

I think that the industry is behind a bit coming back from COVID. :dontknow:

Watched Jurassic World: Dominion. This one was pretty fun and I thought it was definitely better than the previous film.

I watched The Black Phone. Interesting flick. I liked the way it all tied together at the end. Has a few freaky moments!!
Also watched Jurassic World: Dominion. Ok film, amazing sound!

Everything Everywhere All at Once - I enjoyed this one probably the most of the last 3 we've watched. My wife is still sticking with Belfast.

We watched that airplane movie last night on the Kaleidescape. Glad we don't need to wait until November.

Looked and sounded amazing. Added a nice 135 pixel top & bottom mask to keep the indecisive scenes from bleeding over our scope screen borders.

This was also our first time watching the movie. We skipped in theaters and waited for this. It was fantastic, save for a few scenes early on that were copy & paste from the original. I like remaining true, but just recreating a couple scenes with new actors ain't my thing. Make it reminiscent, not a remake.

But 98% of the movie was great. I loved the way they picked up the story, the old timers were great, the new group of recruits was great, they did a fantastic job including Val. Just really liked it a lot.

Not a movie per se, Katrina Babies. I still cannot fathom how someone never really went to jail for that response to one of the worst natural disasters to hit our nation.

We watched Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon on the Kaleidescape last night. Somehow I had avoided ever seeing this until now. Not only is it an amazing movie, but it is just a perfect specimen of shooting on film vs digital. Just an incredibly gorgeous image.
Makes me really wonder if CGI hadn’t become such a factor in film production, would the shift to digital cameras have happened so quickly and forcefully? I understand digital delivery, but there’s just something special about a title that was captured on film that digital cameras can’t give you.

I watched The Shawshank Redemption" three days ago for the very first time. I had borrowed the DVD from some friends at the campground but it skipped so I ordered a BluRay copy for myself which I received yesterday.

The Imitation Game - no idea how we’d never heard of this one until recently. We enjoyed this one. I seem to like just about anything that Benedict Cumberbatch seems to do.

Lightyear - it was ok. Good for streaming, won’t be purchasing.

"Thor: Love and Thunder" streamed on Disney+. It was a fun film perfect for devouring popcorn on a Saturday night : )

We watched this last night and enjoyed it very much. The colors were absolutely gorgeous!

I have an older JVC projector that "does" HDR, but doesn't have any dynamic tone mapping. We watched this on Kaleidescape and the HDR was so aggressive that we had to download the non-HDR UHD version, which was still out-of-this-world gorgeous!

The Black Phone. I'm a horror fan that frequently feels let down by endings that get silly. This one pulled it off!

X was good. Looking forward to seeing Pearl.

That's quite a name, eh? Benedict Cumberbatch. With a name like that, you're bound to be great!

I had some friends over last and watched Hotel Mumbai. It's a solid film... I've only watched it once, however, because it's sooooo brutal. In your face violence that's a bit shocking, if I'm being honest. Pair that with the fact that it's based on an actual terrorist attack, and it makes it even more terrifying.

I watched an older film called, The Keep. It's a pretty cool fantasy/horror tale of good vs. evil directed by Michael Mann, famed director of Heat, Collateral, etc...

Thor: Love and Thunder - seen better, seen worse. Not for purchase is my recommendation for this one. Streaming on Disney+.
